Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has wished former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her birthday, drawing attention on social media amid the country’s continuing political developments.
Shakib shared the message on his verified Facebook page on Monday (28 September). In a brief post, he wrote: “Happy birthday, Apa. Wishing you good health and well-being.”
The message comes against the backdrop of significant political changes in Bangladesh since August 2024. Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and left the country on 5 August that year following a student-led mass movement. Her departure brought an end to nearly 15 years of rule. She subsequently remained in India.
Shakib has also had a direct connection with politics. He contested the 12th parliamentary election from the Magura-1 constituency as an Awami League candidate and was elected as a member of parliament. His political involvement later came under scrutiny following the change in the country’s political landscape.
Questions were also raised in different quarters over his position and role during the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024. After the political transition, a murder case was filed against the cricketer.
The developments also affected Shakib’s plans for the final phase of his Test career. In 2024, he had expressed his intention to play what he hoped would be his final Test match against South Africa in Mirpur in October. He had also prepared to return to Bangladesh from the United States for the match.
However, he was ultimately unable to return to the country, citing the prevailing security and related circumstances. As a result, his plan to make a farewell Test appearance in Mirpur did not materialise. He has since remained in the United States with his family.
Shakib’s career has extended well beyond cricket in recent years, with his involvement in electoral politics adding another dimension to his public profile. His statements and social media activity have consequently received considerable attention, particularly during periods of political change.
His latest post contained no political statement. It was limited to a short birthday greeting wishing Sheikh Hasina good health and well-being. Nevertheless, given the current political context and Shakib’s previous involvement in politics, the message quickly became a subject of discussion on social media.
