A 17-year-old aspiring cricketer has died in a tragic incident in Maharashtra, with police investigating whether disappointment over being left out of a cricket squad played a role in her death. The incident took place on Wednesday night in the Bajaj Nagar police station area of Nagpur, sending shockwaves through her family and the local sporting community.
The teenager, identified as Aditi Choukhandé, was originally from Maharashtra’s Akola district but had been living in Nagpur with members of her family. According to relatives and people who knew her, cricket was a central part of her life. She had been training for a considerable period and was regarded as a promising young player with ambitions of building a future in the sport.
Police said their preliminary investigation suggested that Aditi had been deeply affected by her failure to secure a place in the expected cricket squad. She had reportedly been waiting for an opportunity to progress to the next level, and the disappointment of not being selected may have contributed to a deterioration in her emotional state.
Investigators, however, have stressed that the inquiry is still at an early stage. They are examining whether there were any other sources of stress or personal difficulties that could have affected the teenager. Police have not ruled out the possibility that factors beyond cricket selection may have contributed to the tragedy.
Aditi had lived with her mother and grandfather in Nagpur. Her father, who worked as a contractor for Maharashtra’s Public Works Department, remained in Akola because of his professional commitments. The teenager had passed her higher secondary examinations earlier this year. Alongside her studies, she devoted considerable time to cricket and reportedly shared a close interest in the sport with her brother, with whom she regularly practised.
According to the account being examined by investigators, Aditi had dinner with her mother on Wednesday evening before going to her room. She subsequently closed the door. At the time, her father and grandfather were not at home, while her brother was away in another city to play cricket. Concern reportedly grew after family members were unable to receive a response from her, prompting them to contact the police.
Officers who reached the scene reportedly recovered a note during the investigation. Police said the note contained words of encouragement for Aditi’s brother, praising him and urging him to become a good cricketer and make their parents proud. Investigators also said the note referred to her own disappointment over her cricket career and the pain she felt at not being selected for the team.
Investigating officer Chetan Chauhan said the preliminary assessment was that disappointment over selection may have been a significant factor. According to the officer, Aditi had been hoping for an opportunity to move into the next stage of competitive cricket and had apparently become distressed when that opportunity did not materialise.
The police, however, are taking care not to draw a definitive conclusion before completing the investigation. Officers are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding her non-selection, whether she had expressed concerns about the selection process and whether she had been experiencing any personal, family or other pressures. Statements from relatives, friends and people associated with her cricket training may also help investigators establish a clearer picture of her circumstances.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to the emotional pressures faced by young athletes. Competitive sport can involve intense training, frequent assessments and considerable uncertainty over selection. For teenagers who have invested years of effort in a particular ambition, being overlooked for a squad can be deeply upsetting. Coaches, families and sporting organisations therefore have an important role in ensuring that young players receive appropriate emotional support alongside technical training and performance guidance.
At the same time, specialists and investigators generally caution against attributing a death of this nature to a single event without a thorough examination of the circumstances. A young person’s emotional wellbeing can be shaped by a complex combination of personal experiences, expectations and pressures, many of which may not be immediately visible to those around them.
Aditi’s death has left her family, friends and acquaintances grieving the loss of a young life that had been filled with sporting aspirations. Her case has prompted wider reflection on the need to pay greater attention to the mental wellbeing of young athletes, particularly when they face setbacks or fail to achieve goals to which they have devoted significant time and effort.
Police said all aspects of the case were being investigated. Her recent emotional state, the circumstances surrounding her cricket selection and any additional pressures she may have faced before her death are among the issues being examined. Until the investigation is complete, authorities have indicated that it would be premature to identify non-selection from a cricket team as the sole cause of the tragedy.
