Uncertainty looms over the Indian cricket team’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh next month as reports emerge that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is prioritizing a home series against Afghanistan instead. According to recent reports from cricket portal Cricbuzz, the Board is currently leaning away from making the trip to Dhaka as originally planned, casting a shadow of doubt over the bilateral fixture.
Under the initial itinerary, the Indian squad was scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 28 August to contest a full-fledged white-ball series comprising three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The six-match series was slated to run from 1 through 13 September. However, with less than three weeks remaining before the opening fixture, scheduling conflicts have thrown the entire tour into jeopardy.
Reports indicate that India has given its consent to host the Afghanistan national cricket team for a three-match T20I series in New Delhi, scheduled to take place on 13, 15, and 17 September. The overlapping windows between the Afghanistan fixtures and the proposed Bangladesh tour have sparked widespread speculation across the cricketing fraternity regarding whether the Indian team will pull out of the Bangladesh trip altogether.
Despite the mounting doubts and logistical hurdles, diplomatic and sporting authorities are actively engaging behind the scenes to salvage the series. Addressing the situation during an event in Dhaka on Monday night, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, confirmed that efforts are actively underway to ensure the tour proceeds as planned. He noted that high-level discussions are currently ongoing between the foreign ministers of both nations to resolve scheduling bottlenecks and secure the bilateral agreement.
Bilateral cricket encounters between the two neighboring nations have historically generated immense excitement and fierce competition. India’s previous tour of Bangladesh took place in 2022, a memorable assignment that featured a closely contested two-match Test series won 2-0 by the visitors, alongside an exhilarating three-match ODI series where the Tigers clinched a historic 2-1 victory.
