Bomb Threat Triggers Security Scare at Narendra Modi Stadium

A bomb threat at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium triggered a security scare on Wednesday morning while an Under-19 match between India and Australia was taking place. An email received at around 11am claimed that a bomb had been placed inside the stadium, prompting security personnel to begin an immediate search of the venue.

The threat led to the deployment of a bomb disposal squad and trained sniffer dogs as authorities carried out searches across the stadium. Security teams checked the premises carefully for any suspicious object or explosive device. No bomb was found during the operation.

The relatively small crowd for the junior international match helped prevent panic among spectators. With fewer people inside the stadium than would normally be expected for a major senior international fixture, there was no reported rush or widespread commotion. Security personnel continued their checks while efforts were made to keep the situation under control.

The match itself was completed despite the security alert. India defeated Australia by 10 wickets, with the game ending before the two teams were informed about the threat. The players were told about the email after the match had concluded, and both sides left the stadium at around 1pm.

Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel said the local police station was informed as soon as the threat email was received. A team from the cyber cell also arrived at the stadium as part of the response. He said authorities had taken the threat seriously and did not want to take any chances, even though previous threats of a similar nature had proved to be false.

The stadium has faced such threats before. During the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Indian Premier League, emails containing claims about bombs being placed at the venue were also received. Searches carried out on those occasions did not uncover any explosives.

Wednesday’s incident was not confined to the stadium either. Ahmedabad High Court and several schools and colleges in the city were also reportedly targeted with emails threatening bomb attacks. The fact that several locations received similar threats has prompted security agencies to examine whether the messages were connected.

The timing has also drawn attention because a concert by singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh is scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 21 November. According to police sources, investigators are examining whether the repeated threats are intended to disrupt that event.

Authorities are now working to establish who sent the emails and what motivated the threats. Cyber investigators are expected to examine the digital trail associated with the messages as part of the effort to identify those responsible.

Following the latest alert, security at the Narendra Modi Stadium has been strengthened. While no explosive was recovered and the threat did not disrupt the Under-19 match, officials have maintained a cautious approach given the history of similar incidents at the venue and the upcoming large-scale entertainment event.

The incident once again highlights the security challenges faced by major sporting and entertainment venues, where even an unverified threat can require a substantial emergency response. In Ahmedabad, authorities are now treating the latest messages as a matter requiring investigation while ensuring that future events at the stadium are conducted under enhanced security arrangements.
