Hridoy Retains Bangladesh T20 Captaincy for Zimbabwe Tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named a 15-member squad for the forthcoming three-match Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe, with Towhid Hridoy set to continue as captain after regular skipper Litton Das was rested despite making his return from injury.

Hridoy, who assumed the leadership during Bangladesh’s recent T20I series against Australia in Litton’s absence, has retained the confidence of the selectors. Although Litton has recovered from the injury that ruled him out of the Australia series and has already returned to competitive cricket, he is currently featuring in Bangladesh’s One-Day International squad against Zimbabwe rather than the T20 side.

The decision to rest Litton from the shortest format reflects Bangladesh’s workload management strategy during a demanding international calendar. By allowing Hridoy to continue in the role, the selectors have also opted to preserve continuity within the team after his recent stint as captain. The move provides the talented middle-order batter with another opportunity to strengthen his credentials as a leader while ensuring that one of Bangladesh’s senior players is managed carefully ahead of future assignments.

The squad includes several notable recalls as Bangladesh continue to fine-tune combinations for upcoming international competitions. Experienced all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain has returned to the T20 fold after an extended absence, while middle-order batter Yasir Ali Chowdhury has also been recalled. Fast-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin, who missed the Australia series, has regained his place and adds valuable balance with both bat and ball.

Their inclusion comes at the expense of Soumya Sarkar and Shamim Hossain Patwary, both of whom have been omitted from the squad. The changes underline the selectors’ intention to evaluate different combinations and provide opportunities to players capable of strengthening Bangladesh’s depth in the format.

Bangladesh’s batting unit blends youth with experience. Captain Hridoy will be supported by opening options Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan Tamim, while Mohammad Saif Hassan offers additional top-order stability. Yasir Ali returns to reinforce the middle order, and Nurul Hasan Sohan brings valuable experience behind the stumps, having served Bangladesh across all three international formats over several years.

The all-round department appears well equipped, with Sheikh Mehedi, Mosaddek Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin offering versatility in both batting and bowling. Such flexibility is often crucial in T20 cricket, where teams rely heavily on players capable of contributing in multiple disciplines.

Bangladesh’s bowling attack features a balanced mix of spin and pace. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and leg-spinner Rishad Hossain will be expected to shoulder much of the spin responsibility, while Sheikh Mehedi provides an additional off-spin option. In the pace department, experienced left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman will spearhead the attack alongside Shariful Islam. They will be supported by the exciting young fast bowler Nahid Rana, whose raw pace has attracted considerable attention, and Abdul Gaffar Saklain, who has earned another opportunity at international level.

The entire T20I series will be staged at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, one of Zimbabwe’s most established cricket venues. The opening match is scheduled for 15 July, with the remaining fixtures to be played on 17 and 19 July. All three matches are set to begin at 4:30 pm Bangladesh time.

The series carries significance beyond the immediate results. Bangladesh continue to build a squad capable of competing consistently in T20 cricket while preparing for future international tournaments. Rotating senior players, assessing emerging talent and providing leadership opportunities are all part of the team’s broader strategy as they seek greater consistency in the shortest format.
