Cricketer Nayeem Hasan Assaulted by Officers in Chittagong

The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has issued a formal condemnation following allegations that national team spin bowler Nayeem Hasan was assaulted and harassed by individuals identifying themselves as Detective Branch (DB) police officers. The incident, which occurred in Chittagong, has sparked widespread anger among his teammates and the broader domestic sporting community, with prominent figures demanding a full investigation and swift legal penalties for those involved.

According to a detailed statement released by CWAB, the encounter took place on Thursday night, 12 June, as Hasan was returning to his private residence in Chittagong. He had travelled back home immediately after competing in a Dhaka Premier League fixture held in Savar. Upon reaching the Lalkhan Bazar area, his vehicle was intercepted by police personnel.

Physical Assault and Unlawful Detention Detailed

The welfare association reported that the police officers exhibited hostile behaviour from the outset of the interaction. When Hasan attempted to speak and clarify his identity, an officer physically restrained him by the throat. Despite numerous onlookers and bystanders intervening to explicitly inform the officers that the individual was a national cricket player representing Bangladesh, the personnel proceeded to strike Hasan with a pipe.

Following the physical altercation on the street, Hasan was transported to Khulshi Police Station. CWAB stated that the mistreatment and verbal abuse continued within the station premises. The situation only defused when Hasan managed to initiate a telephone call to request external assistance, at which point the handling officers ceased their aggressive actions.

Outpour of Solidarity from National Teammates

The incident has triggered unified outrage from the country’s elite cricketers, who have publically demanded a transparent accountability process. CWAB President Mohammad Mithun confirmed that he has spoken directly with Hasan to assure him of the absolute solidarity of the domestic cricketing community, emphasizing that such state-sponsored hostility is unacceptable for any citizen.

Several of Hasan’s international teammates have used public platforms to register their protest and demand systemic justice.

“Keep your head high, Nayeem. You are a wonderful human being,” opening batsman Litton Das posted. “What happened to Nayeem Hasan is deeply concerning and completely unacceptable. It is heartbreaking to see him go through such suffering. No citizen of the country deserves such treatment, let alone a national cricketer who has proudly represented Bangladesh.”

National team opener Parvez Hossain Emon also condemned the event, describing it as an assault on the dignity of the country’s entire sporting arena, whilst all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz echoed the sentiments, calling for the immediate identification and exemplary punishment of the culprits.
