Comilla Super Stars etched their name into the history books by becoming the inaugural champions of the Bangla Hundred League (BHL), defeating Chittagong Kings by five wickets in a gripping Season 1 final held in Sydney. In a contest that swung dramatically from one side to the other until the closing moments, Comilla held their nerve to secure victory with just one delivery remaining and lift the competition’s first-ever title.
After losing the toss, Chittagong Kings were asked to bat first and suffered an early setback with the loss of a key wicket. The pressure, however, was absorbed impressively by captain Kourab Akter, who anchored the innings with a composed yet increasingly authoritative knock. Having begun cautiously, he accelerated as the innings progressed, striking 76 runs from 42 deliveries. His innings featured eight boundaries and three sixes, allowing his side to recover despite wickets falling regularly at the opposite end.
Thanks largely to Kourab’s disciplined and fluent batting, Chittagong Kings finished on a competitive 142 for 7 from their allotted overs. Although the total was not imposing, it offered their bowlers enough to defend in a high-pressure final where every run carried added significance.
Comilla Super Stars began their pursuit of 143 with confidence. Openers Labib Mahbub and Mehedi Hasan Ifti established a solid platform, rotating the strike effectively while capitalising on scoring opportunities whenever they arose. Their positive approach ensured the required run rate remained under control throughout the early stages.
Labib contributed a valuable 28 before departing, but Ifti continued to dominate the chase with remarkable composure. His outstanding innings of 66 from only 30 balls combined calculated aggression with intelligent shot selection. He consistently placed the opposition under pressure, ensuring Comilla maintained control for much of the pursuit despite the importance of the occasion.
The final, however, produced one last dramatic twist. Just as victory appeared within easy reach, Comilla lost several wickets in quick succession, allowing Chittagong Kings to force their way back into the contest. The atmosphere inside the ground became increasingly tense as supporters of both teams sensed the match could still swing either way.
With five runs required from the final five deliveries, the pressure reached its peak. Every ball carried enormous significance, and the crowd in Sydney responded with growing anticipation. Mehedi Hasan Ifti’s match-winning innings earned him the Player of the Final award after his decisive contribution with the bat. His all-round performances throughout the competition proved vital to his team’s success, while his tally of 10 wickets also made him the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.
Although Chittagong Kings fell short in the title decider, captain Kourab Akter enjoyed an exceptional tournament with the bat. His aggregate of 250 runs made him the highest run-scorer of the inaugural BHL season, reflecting his consistency and leadership across the competition despite missing out on the championship.
The first edition of the Bangla Hundred League delivered far more than competitive cricket. Staged in Sydney, the tournament provided a vibrant platform for the Bangladeshi diaspora to celebrate their shared passion for the game while strengthening community ties.
