Bangladesh have received a significant boost despite suffering a heavy defeat in their final warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI, with experienced left-arm spinner Taijul Islam recovering well from a finger injury and remaining hopeful of being fit for the opening Test.
Taijul sustained the injury while batting on the first day of the practice match. He developed pain and swelling in the affected finger and was subsequently unable to continue normally. He did not bowl after Bangladesh’s first innings and was also unable to take part in the second innings with the bat.
The injury initially raised concerns within the Bangladesh camp, particularly because the team are already dealing with fitness doubts and absences in other areas. Fast bowler Nahid Rana is unavailable for the Australia tour, while Litton Das is also facing uncertainty. Losing Taijul for the Test series would therefore have further complicated Bangladesh’s team combination.
However, Bangladesh team physiotherapist Bayzidul Islam has provided encouraging news about the spinner’s recovery. According to the physiotherapist, both the pain and swelling in Taijul’s finger have reduced considerably since the injury.
In a video message released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bayzidul said Taijul had experienced pain and swelling after being struck by the injury on the opening day, but his condition had improved significantly. With several days remaining before the first Test, the medical team has enough time to continue his rehabilitation and gradually prepare him for match conditions.
Taijul’s availability would be particularly valuable to Bangladesh. A seasoned Test cricketer, he has established himself as one of the country’s leading spin bowlers and provides control, experience and variety to the attack. His left-arm orthodox bowling can also offer Bangladesh an important tactical option during long spells, particularly as the team assess the demands of playing Test cricket in Australian conditions.
The encouraging update comes at a time when Bangladesh have plenty to address following their disappointing warm-up performance. They were dismissed for just 54 runs against the Cricket Australia XI and eventually suffered an innings defeat. The batting collapse exposed concerns about their ability to withstand sustained pressure from Australian-style bowling and adapt to conditions that can offer assistance to seamers, particularly with the new ball.
For Bangladesh, the practice match was intended primarily as preparation rather than a definitive indication of their Test prospects. Nevertheless, the collapse has underlined the importance of greater discipline and resilience from the batting unit before the series begins.
Taijul’s recovery, therefore, offers some welcome relief. The team will not want to take unnecessary risks with an experienced player so close to the opening Test, and his final availability is likely to depend on further medical assessments, his ability to bowl without discomfort and his overall fitness.
The first Test between Bangladesh and Australia is scheduled to begin in Darwin on 13 August, with the second and final Test due to start in Mackay on 22 August. Those few days could prove crucial for Taijul as he works towards a full recovery.
For a Bangladesh side searching for answers after a difficult preparation match, having their experienced left-arm spinner back in contention would be a timely boost.
