According to the updated rankings released on Wednesday (21 October), Taskin has climbed nine places to 12th in the ODI bowling standings, while fellow pacer Shoriful has moved up two positions to 11th.
The improvement represents an encouraging development for Bangladesh’s pace attack, with both bowlers now occupying places just outside the world’s top 10 in the format.
Taskin’s significant rise follows his impressive bowling performance in the ongoing tri-nation series involving Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in the United Arab Emirates.
In Bangladesh’s opening match against Zimbabwe, the right-arm pacer claimed three wickets, delivering an individual performance that stood out despite his team’s disappointing result. Bangladesh eventually suffered a 99-run defeat, but Taskin’s contribution provided a positive outcome from an otherwise difficult encounter.
His nine-place improvement underlines the importance of individual performances in the ICC rankings, where players are assessed through a points-based system that considers their contributions in international matches.
Shoriful, meanwhile, has continued to strengthen his position among leading ODI bowlers. The left-arm pacer’s two-place rise takes him to 11th, one position ahead of Taskin.
Having two fast bowlers positioned so close to the top 10 is a promising sign for Bangladesh, particularly as the national side seeks greater consistency in international limited-overs cricket.
While Bangladesh’s pace duo enjoyed upward movement, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan further consolidated his position at the summit of the ODI bowling rankings.
Rashid produced an outstanding performance against Zimbabwe, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs. His latest figures helped lift his rating to 742 points, extending his advantage over the other leading bowlers.
Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed occupies second place, followed by South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj in third. Rashid now holds an 80-point advantage over his nearest challengers, highlighting his commanding position in the rankings.
The Afghan leg-spinner has long been recognised for his ability to control scoring rates while taking wickets, qualities that have made him a formidable opponent across limited-overs formats.
Afghanistan also received encouraging news in the ODI batting rankings, with Sedikullah Atal making one of the week’s most significant advances.
Atal climbed 12 places to 20th after scoring an impressive 102 from 110 deliveries against Zimbabwe. His century demonstrated his ability to construct a substantial innings and provided a valuable contribution to Afghanistan’s batting efforts.
The performance has strengthened his standing among international ODI batters, marking another positive development for Afghanistan’s emerging batting talent.
Elsewhere, Pakistan’s Salman Agha and England’s Ben Duckett also improved their positions following the series in Rawalpindi.
Salman moved up to 12th in the ODI batting rankings, while Duckett advanced to 13th. Their progress reflects the impact of recent international performances on the closely contested batting standings.
Changes were also recorded in the ICC Twenty20 International rankings following the series between India and the West Indies.
West Indies captain Shai Hope climbed two positions to ninth in the T20I batting rankings, securing a place among the format’s leading 10 batters.
Hope’s improvement is another encouraging development for the Caribbean side, which has traditionally placed considerable emphasis on aggressive batting in the shortest international format.
His teammate Sherfane Rutherford also enjoyed a substantial rise, advancing six places to 18th in the T20I batting standings.
Rutherford’s movement reflects his growing standing in the format, where the ability to score quickly and influence matches within limited opportunities is particularly valuable.
West Indies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was another notable mover, climbing 10 places to 26th in the T20I bowling rankings.
Motie’s progress adds to the positive developments for the Caribbean team, with improvements recorded in both its batting and bowling departments.
The ICC rankings are updated regularly to reflect performances in international cricket. Players can gain or lose rating points depending on their results, the strength of their opposition and other factors within the ranking system.
For Bangladesh, however, the most significant development in the latest update is the progress of Taskin and Shoriful.
Their positions at 12th and 11th respectively provide encouragement for a national side that continues to rely on its fast bowlers to deliver breakthroughs and maintain pressure against international opponents.
Taskin’s sharp rise is particularly noteworthy given Bangladesh’s defeat to Zimbabwe, demonstrating that strong individual contributions can still receive recognition even when a team fails to secure victory.
With both pacers now within striking distance of the top 10, maintaining consistency in upcoming international fixtures will be crucial to their ambitions of climbing further.
Their progress also offers Bangladesh a positive sign as the team looks to translate individual bowling performances into stronger collective results in ODI cricket.
