Sam Konstas has opened up about his much-discussed confrontation with Virat Kohli during his Test debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, recalling an occasion that quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of Australia’s 2024–25 home series against India.
The Australian youngster is currently in India with Australia A, giving him an opportunity to reflect on an international debut that was memorable for far more than his batting. His first Test appearance saw him come up against two of India’s biggest stars, Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, in a series of highly charged moments.
Konstas made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne in December 2024. He immediately attracted attention with his fearless approach at the crease, taking on India’s bowlers rather than allowing the occasion to dictate his style of play.
The confrontation with Kohli came during the first day of the Test. The two players crossed paths on the field and became involved in a heated exchange after making physical contact. The incident quickly spread across international cricket coverage and became one of the defining talking points of Konstas’s debut.
Konstas was subsequently fined 20 per cent of his match fee over the incident. At the time, the episode generated considerable criticism and debate, particularly because it involved a teenage player making his international debut against one of the most experienced figures in modern cricket.
Speaking recently to The Times of India, Konstas offered a more relaxed perspective on what happened. He said Kohli had essentially bumped him with his shoulder, but stressed that the incident was not something either player had allowed to linger.
According to Konstas, the two simply moved on after the confrontation. He also revealed that Kohli spoke to him after the match and wished him well for the future.
That post-match exchange appears to have shaped the way Konstas now remembers the incident. Rather than portraying it as a lasting dispute, he regards it as part of the intensity that can sometimes accompany elite sport.
Kohli was not the only Indian player with whom Konstas had a memorable encounter in Melbourne. The young opener also found himself at the centre of an animated exchange with Bumrah.
Earlier in the match, Konstas produced one of the boldest shots of his debut when he used a reverse-scoop style stroke to hit Bumrah for six. It was a remarkable moment given Bumrah’s reputation as one of the world’s leading fast bowlers. The six was also notable because it was the first time Bumrah had conceded a six in Test cricket.
Konstas’s reaction after the shot added another layer to the moment. He appeared to engage with Bumrah, and the exchange between the two players became another talking point from the match.
Looking back, however, Konstas said he does not remember every detail of the episode. He described the overall experience with a smile, acknowledging how unusual it was to have so much happen during his very first Test.
For a young batter making his international debut, facing Bumrah was already a major challenge. Doing so while carrying the confidence to attack one of the game’s most respected bowlers made the occasion even more striking.
Konstas’s Melbourne debut therefore became a mixture of impressive strokeplay, intense on-field competition and an early introduction to the scrutiny that comes with international cricket. His encounters with Kohli and Bumrah ensured that his name remained in the headlines well beyond the match itself.
Now, with time having passed, Konstas appears to view those moments with considerably less tension. The confrontation with Kohli, the exchanges with Bumrah and the audacious six have all become part of the story of his first Test.
For the Australian youngster, what began as an extraordinarily eventful introduction to Test cricket is now simply a memorable chapter from the earliest stage of his international career.
