Pakistan opened their tri-nation cricket series with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka, but the hosts and their opponents have both been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for failing to maintain the required over rate.
Under the ICC’s decision, Pakistan’s players have been fined 10 per cent of their match fees, while Sri Lanka’s players will lose five per cent. The penalties were imposed after both teams failed to complete their overs within the stipulated time during the opening match.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their team falls short of the required rate. The calculation takes into account the time available to the teams and any applicable allowances under the regulations.
After the relevant allowances were considered, Pakistan were found to be two overs short of the required rate. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, fell one over behind. Consequently, Pakistan’s players received a 10 per cent fine, while their Sri Lankan counterparts were fined five per cent of their match fees.
The charges were brought by the match officials, including on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi.
Match referee Jeff Crowe proposed the penalties, which were accepted by Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis. As both captains agreed to the proposed sanctions, no formal hearing was required.
Slow over rates are treated as a disciplinary matter in international cricket. The ICC’s regulations are designed to ensure that teams complete their overs within the allotted time, helping matches progress smoothly and limiting unnecessary delays.
Although Pakistan secured a winning start to the series, the financial penalty has taken some of the shine off their opening performance. Sri Lanka have also been sanctioned despite their defeat, underlining that both results and compliance with playing regulations remain important throughout the competition.
As the tri-nation series continues, both sides will need to pay closer attention to their over rates while preparing for their upcoming matches. Maintaining discipline and managing time effectively will be essential alongside their efforts to secure further victories.
