England secured the Twenty20 international series against Sri Lanka with a commanding six-wicket victory in Cardiff, wrapping up the contest with one match still to play. Liam Dawson’s disciplined spell with the ball and Tom Banton’s explosive half-century proved decisive as the hosts chased down Sri Lanka’s target of 147 with 47 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka had appeared well placed during the early stages of their innings after being asked to bat first. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis provided an aggressive start, putting together 55 runs during the opening five overs. Their positive approach gave Sri Lanka early momentum and suggested they could post a competitive total.
The situation changed sharply when Dawson entered the attack during the final over of the powerplay. The left-arm spinner struck twice in quick succession, disrupting Sri Lanka’s rhythm and putting pressure on the middle order. From there, wickets began to fall at regular intervals.
Nissanka was the leading contributor at the top of the innings, making 37 from 21 deliveries. Charith Asalanka added 31, while Wanindu Hasaranga scored 27. However, the remaining batters struggled to build partnerships or maintain the scoring rate. Sri Lanka lost nine wickets for only 90 runs after their promising start, with just 12 runs coming from the final four overs.
Sri Lanka eventually finished on 145 for nine from their 20 overs. Dawson was England’s most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 32 runs, while Jamie Overton took two wickets. The total left England with a manageable target and little margin for error in their pursuit.
England’s response was emphatic from the outset. Openers Jos Buttler and Aneurin Donald attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers and raced to 51 runs in only four and a half overs. Their brisk partnership ensured that the required run rate never became a significant concern.
Buttler made 30 before departing, while Donald contributed 21. England captain Harry Brook then added another burst of momentum, smashing three sixes in an eight-ball cameo worth 23 runs. His brief stay at the crease further reduced the pressure on the chasing side.
Banton then took centre stage. The England batter produced an aggressive unbeaten 52 from just 24 balls, striking four sixes as he took advantage of the opportunity to finish the chase quickly. England reached 146 for four in only 12.1 overs, completing a six-wicket victory with 47 deliveries remaining.
Dawson was named Player of the Match after his influential all-round contribution to England’s performance. His three wickets had helped break the back of Sri Lanka’s innings before Banton and the rest of the batting line-up completed a comfortable chase.
The result also extends England’s impressive record in recent Twenty20 internationals under coach Brendon McCullum. England have now won 22 of their last 25 T20Is during his tenure. Their reported international T20I win rate currently stands at 88 per cent, highlighting the consistency of their results in the format.
With the series already decided, the two sides will meet again at Old Trafford next Saturday for the final match. Sri Lanka will have an opportunity to end the series with a victory, while England will look to complete the contest with another strong performance.
