Marnus Labuschagne has retained his spot in Australia’s 16-man Test squad for the upcoming three-match tour of South Africa, despite enduring a prolonged period of poor form at the international level.
The 30-year-old top-order batter’s selection was the primary talking point ahead of the announcement following a lean run that stretches back to July 2023, the date of his last Test century. In the 43 innings since that milestone, Labuschagne has averaged a modest 24.69. His struggles continued during Australia’s recent Test outing against Bangladesh, where he managed scores of just 1, 31, and 4. Having already lost his place in the One-Day International squads for recent series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, the tour represents a crucial opportunity for the South African-born cricketer to revive his international red-ball career in familiar surroundings.
Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, addressed the batter’s ongoing lean patch directly while reasserting the panel’s belief in his capabilities.
“We are not shying away from the fact that we want more runs from Marnus,” Bailey acknowledged. “However, we firmly believe he still has a positive contribution to make to this side.”
Young all-rounder Cooper Connolly earns a recall after missing out on the previous Test series in Bangladesh. Connolly made an impression during the white-ball leg of that same tour in June, scoring a maiden ODI century. Although yet to establish a track record of heavy scoring in domestic first-class cricket, his potential and willingness to develop persuaded selectors to bring him back into the Test setup. Bailey commended Connolly’s mindset, noting that the young cricketer continues to absorb lessons whenever integrated into the senior squad.
The bowling attack welcomes back experienced pace bowler Michael Neser following his recovery from injury. He joins regular seamers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland, offering Australia substantial depth for South African pitch conditions.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has also been included alongside main option Nathan Lyon. While conditions in South Africa rarely call for a dual-spin bowling attack, Kuhnemann’s presence serves a strategic tactical purpose; his bowling in the nets will help Australia’s batters prepare for South Africa’s leading left-arm spinner, Keshav Maharaj.
The squad balances established figures like Steven Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, and Josh Inglis with younger options including Cameron Green, Beau Webster, and Matt Renshaw.
The three-match series, scheduled for October in Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town, forms a crucial segment of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Tensions remain sharp between the two nations following the previous World Test Championship final at Lord’s, where South Africa defeated Australia to lift the trophy.
