Iyer Returns as Captain; Teen Sensation Selected

India have announced a revised squad for their forthcoming T20 assignments, appointing Shreyas Iyer as the new captain. The development confirms earlier indications, with Iyer returning to the T20 side for the first time since his last appearance in 2023 and assuming leadership responsibilities immediately.

The selection also brings a significant change in leadership, as Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to a T20 World Cup title earlier this year during the February–March window, has not only relinquished the captaincy but has also been omitted from the squad. The team has been named for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as for the Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan.

A notable inclusion is 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has earned his first national call-up. The selection follows his performances in the Indian Premier League, where he scored 776 runs at a strike rate exceeding 200. His inclusion makes him one of the youngest players to be selected for India at senior level.

India are scheduled to play two T20 internationals against Ireland in Belfast on 26 and 28 June. This will be followed by a five-match T20 series against England, to be played between 1 and 11 July. Should Suryavanshi make his debut during either series, he will become the first Indian cricketer to feature in an international match before turning 16. The current benchmark is held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days, and his One Day International debut at 16 years and 238 days.

Additional inclusions in the squad are Nitish Kumar, Ravi Bishnoi and Prince Yadav. However, Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav have been left out despite being part of the World Cup-winning squad. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, although Bumrah has been retained in the squad for the Asian Games.

India will play their first T20 matches since retaining the World Cup title under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy in March. His exclusion from the current squad follows a period of modest returns with the bat.

By the time of the next T20 World Cup in 2028, Suryakumar Yadav will be 38 years old. His recent figures indicate a decline in output relative to expectations.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer brings a strong leadership record from franchise cricket. Under his captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL title in 2024. He also led Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. His recent batting form has also been consistent.
