Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain is set to make a high-profile return to Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) after being retained by the Hobart Hurricanes for the forthcoming 16th edition of the tournament. The Tasmanian franchise officially announced his re-signing across their social media platforms on Thursday, rewarding the young spinner for a breakthrough debut campaign that cemented his position as one of the competition’s most reliable slow bowlers.
Rishad enjoyed an outstanding inaugural season in the BBL, adapting seamlessly to Australian conditions to finish as Hobart’s leading wicket-taker. Across 12 appearances, the 22-year-old took 15 wickets, demonstrating exceptional control, subtle flight variations, and a lethal delivery of his wrong’un. His ability to consistently break partnerships in the middle overs transformed him into a vital asset for the Hurricanes, while simultaneously showcasing the rising calibre of Bangladeshi talent on the global franchise circuit.
The Hurricanes’ bowling department will feature an intriguing tactical dynamic this season following the high-profile signing of Australian international leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who crossed over from the Melbourne Renegades. Combining Zampa’s wealth of international experience with Rishad’s wrist-spin capabilities gives Hobart one of the most versatile spin attacks in the competition. Management will have the flexibility to deploy the duo either in tandem or adapt their selection depending on pitch conditions and match situations.
For Rishad, sharing a dressing room with Zampa offers a valuable opportunity to refine his craft, particularly in mastering match tactics, line-and-length discipline, and executing under high-pressure scenarios. Navigating intense competition for places within the playing XI will be his primary challenge as he seeks to maintain his performance levels.
Salliann Beams, General Manager of High Performance at the Hobart Hurricanes, confirmed that Rishad was eager to return to the club after thoroughly enjoying his time in Tasmania last season. She emphasized that his enthusiasm for the franchise, coupled with his on-field impact and seamless integration into the squad dynamic, made extending his contract an easy decision for management.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rishad will be available for the first eight matches of the campaign. The 16th season of the Big Bash League is scheduled to begin on 12 December, with the Hobart Hurricanes opening their campaign on 17 December against the Brisbane Heat. His presence in the initial block of fixtures will be critical as Hobart aims to establish early momentum in their pursuit of the title.
