Sourav Ganguly is set to take on a new challenge in the Indian Premier League after being appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 season. The former India captain has already been a familiar presence in the franchise’s dugout, but his latest role will place him at the centre of the team’s cricketing strategy and preparations.
Ganguly, widely known as ‘Maharaj’, has enjoyed a long association with the Delhi Capitals set-up. He joined the franchise as an adviser in 2019 and subsequently became Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s Capitals teams after completing his tenure as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
His appointment also comes with recent coaching experience in franchise cricket. Ganguly served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 league, giving him an opportunity to work directly in a competitive T20 environment outside India. He will now bring that experience back to the IPL as Delhi look to build a team capable of challenging for their first title.
Ganguly succeeds Hemang Badani, who had been Delhi Capitals’ head coach for the previous two seasons. The change marks another phase in the franchise’s efforts to find the right combination of leadership and coaching to turn promising performances into sustained success.
Speaking after his appointment, Ganguly expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the IPL dugout in a coaching capacity. He described Delhi Capitals as a franchise close to his heart, pointing to the strong relationship he has developed with the organisation over several years.
The former India opener also stressed that he is already familiar with the franchise’s ownership, management, support staff and players. That familiarity could help him settle into the role quickly as preparations begin for the 2027 campaign.
Ganguly said the squad possesses a group of talented cricketers and that the team has produced encouraging performances in recent times. His immediate objective will be to develop a strong and fearless side capable of competing consistently throughout the season.
For Delhi Capitals, the appointment carries significance because the franchise remains one of the long-established IPL teams yet to lift the trophy. Punjab Kings are the other team from the league’s early years still waiting for their maiden IPL title.
Delhi came closest to ending that wait in 2020, when they reached their first IPL final. They were unable to complete the campaign with the trophy, but the run represented the franchise’s best finish in the competition up to that point.
The following season, Delhi again enjoyed an impressive league campaign, finishing at the top of the points table. However, they could not progress to the final after the play-off stage. Since then, the Capitals have failed to qualify for the play-offs.
Their most recent campaign ended with Delhi in sixth place in the points table, with Axar Patel leading the side and Badani in charge of the coaching set-up. That result will add to the pressure on the franchise to produce a stronger challenge in 2027.
Ganguly therefore begins his tenure with a clear and demanding task. His extensive experience as a player, captain, administrator and franchise coach gives him a broad understanding of the different demands of elite cricket. For Delhi Capitals, the hope will be that his latest role can finally help transform years of promise into the IPL title they have long been chasing.
