At just 15, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already given Afghanistan plenty to think about ahead of India’s three-match T20I series. The teenage left-handed opener has emerged as one of the most talked-about young batters in Indian cricket, and Afghanistan are taking no chances with him before the series gets under way.
Afghanistan will face India in the opening T20I today, with Shreyas Iyer leading the Indian side. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran acknowledged that Vaibhav cannot be underestimated simply because of his age.
The Afghan camp has been studying the teenager’s batting in detail as it prepares to counter his attacking style. Their preparations include reviewing video footage of his performances and gathering information from members of the squad who have faced him in the Indian Premier League.
Zadran described Vaibhav as an “incredible talent” and said the team had held discussions about how best to restrict him. The Afghan captain also revealed that players with first-hand experience of facing the youngster in the IPL had provided useful insights.
The preparations, however, are not limited to conversations within the dressing room. Afghanistan’s management has used video analysis to examine Vaibhav’s batting and identify areas that could potentially be targeted by their bowlers. Despite that detailed preparation, Zadran does not want his team to overcomplicate the strategy.
The message from the Afghanistan camp is straightforward: understand the batter, establish a clear plan and execute it properly on the field. Zadran believes a simple strategy carried out effectively could be more valuable than an elaborate plan that becomes difficult to implement under match pressure.
Vaibhav’s reputation has grown largely through his performances in the shortest format, particularly after attracting attention on the IPL stage. But his recent displays in red-ball cricket have also demonstrated that his ability extends beyond T20 cricket.
In the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, Vaibhav represented East Zone and scored 192 runs across five innings. One of his most significant contributions came in the semi-final against Central Zone, when he made 92 runs. The innings played an important role in helping his side move towards victory and added another dimension to his growing reputation.
His return to T20 cricket now gives him another opportunity to make an impact. For Afghanistan, that also means dealing with a young batter who has shown an ability to perform in different formats rather than relying solely on his reputation as a T20 player.
The series is also an important assignment for Zadran himself. Having taken over the T20 captaincy from Rashid Khan, he is facing a significant test of his leadership against a strong Indian side. Zadran has said that while captaincy carries considerable responsibility, he is enjoying the challenge.
For him, one of the key aspects of leadership is remaining calm when matches enter difficult phases and making the right decisions under pressure. That quality will be tested against India, particularly if the contest reaches a tense stage.
Afghanistan will also look to make the most of familiar conditions and produce their best cricket throughout the series. Zadran believes a disciplined performance could give his team the opportunity to make the contest memorable.
Much of the attention before the opening match, however, will remain on Vaibhav. At only 15, he has already forced an international opponent to devote specific planning to him. Whether Afghanistan’s preparations can successfully restrict the young opener will become clear once the first ball is bowled.
