Former Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal has been awarded Honorary Life Membership by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), joining an exclusive group of cricketers recognised for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
The prestigious honour was announced by the MCC in a statement on Sunday. Alongside Tamim, the club also conferred Honorary Life Membership on New Zealand stalwarts Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, former Australia international Mel Jones, and India’s accomplished Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara.
Honorary Life Membership is widely regarded as one of cricket’s highest distinctions. The MCC, the custodian of the Laws of Cricket, traditionally bestows the honour on players and individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the game through their performances, service and lasting influence.
Tamim becomes only the second Bangladeshi cricketer to receive the honour after Shakib Al Hasan, further strengthening his legacy as one of the country’s greatest-ever cricketers.
Widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s finest opening batters, Tamim enjoyed an international career spanning more than a decade and established himself as a cornerstone of the national team across all three formats. Known for his fluent stroke play and fearless approach, he played a pivotal role in many of Bangladesh’s landmark victories on the international stage.
In Test cricket, Tamim scored more than 5,000 runs, making him Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in the format. One of the defining moments of his career came at Lord’s in 2010, when he struck a memorable century against England. The innings earned him a place on the iconic Lord’s Honours Board, reserved for players who score a Test century or claim a five-wicket haul at the historic venue.
Tamim’s achievements in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) were even more remarkable. He amassed more than 8,000 runs in 243 ODI appearances, making him Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the format. Throughout his career, he provided consistency at the top of the order and was instrumental in the team’s rise as a competitive force in international cricket.
His performances also brought international recognition. In 2011, Tamim was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year and was also honoured as Wisden‘s Test Cricketer of the Year in recognition of his outstanding achievements during that period.
The latest group of MCC Honorary Life Members reflects excellence across different eras and formats of the game. New Zealand veterans Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine have also been recognised as they prepare to retire from international cricket following the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Both have enjoyed distinguished careers spanning well over a decade and have played a significant role in advancing women’s cricket globally.
Former Australia international Mel Jones, who has continued to make valuable contributions to the game as a broadcaster and administrator since retiring, also received the honour. India’s Cheteshwar Pujara, celebrated for his resilience, patience and consistency in Test cricket, completes this year’s list of honorary life members.
For Tamim, the recognition represents another milestone in an illustrious cricketing journey. Having served Bangladesh with distinction as an opening batter and national captain, and now leading the Bangladesh Cricket Board as its president, the Honorary Life Membership acknowledges not only his impressive records but also his enduring contribution to the growth and international standing of Bangladesh cricket.
